WWF Vision Statement: Responsible Use of Alternative Materials to Address Plastic Pollution

Plastic pollution is an urgent environmental crisis that demands a significant reduction in plastic production and a shift away from fossil-based feedstocks. While many look to materials like paper, metal, or glass as a primary solution, substitution must be applied thoughtfully as part of a broader suite of interventions. To ensure positive outcomes for both people and nature, we must prioritise a systems-based, circular economy approach that values overall waste reduction over simply switching material types.

WWF advocates for a holistic “systems thinking” approach to material use, noting that there is no universally “better” material. Substitution should only be considered when plastic cannot be eliminated or reduced, and only if the alternative offers clearly superior environmental and social outcomes. The vision is guided by five key principles: responsible sourcing, safeguarding human health, designing for circularity, aligning with local infrastructure, and conducting full life cycle assessments. Ultimately, the goal is not just to reduce plastic, but to lower our total material consumption and environmental footprint.
