Mediterranean

The Most Visited Region in The World

World renowned for its natural beauty and tourist attractions, the Mediterranean is suffering from record levels of plastic pollution that threaten marine species, human health and the Blue Economy.

Regional economic losses attributed to plastic pollution are estimated at €641 million per year, with tourism being the most affected. Ironically, the almost 300 million tourists that visit the Mediterranean each year, account for 40% of marine litter in the region during the summer holiday months, making tourism a key sector to focus on when tackling plastic in the region.

Plastic is Leaking into the Sea

Coastal activities are responsible for half of the plastic entering the sea, with more than half a million tonne of plastic entering Mediterranean waters each year – the equivalent of dumping 33,800 plastic bottles into the sea every minute. WWF is now engaging coastal tourist destinations to make them leaders of change in the fight against plastic pollution.

Global Strategy. Local Solutions.

From historic villages and tourist destinations to megacities and industrial hubs, cities in the Mediterranean are taking a lead on combating plastic pollution.
