WWF-Philippines Partners With Nestlé to Improve Community Waste Management

Supported by Nestlé Philippines and co-created with KALIPI – a for-women entrepreneurship group – as well as other community members, NAKAMOTO is a local waste collection pilot that uses motorcycles and push carts to support barangays that are not serviced by the municipal waste collection service.

NAKAMOTO aims to improve waste segregation for 6 pilot barangays and increase collection capacity in Malinao – the assigned barangay for the Material Recovery Facility in Donsol. Donsol is a Plastic Smart City and popular tourist destination as home to the endangered whale shark population. WWF-Philippines has been working in Donsol since 1998, to protect whale sharks, helping to transform a fishing town into an ecotourism hotspot.

By supporting KALIPI and other community groups, NAKAMOTO aims to scale ground-up community-based solutions to support the local government’s goal in reducing plastic waste to end plastic leakage in nature.
