Developed by the Blue Impact Network in partnership with Chumbe Island Coral Park and the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism, the REDUCE Guidelines 2026 provide a comprehensive, evidence-based roadmap to phase out single-use plastics across Zanzibar’s hospitality sector. Co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through GIZ’s StawiBluu project, this strategic manual directly supports the Greener Zanzibar campaign and the Zanzibar Declaration on Sustainable Tourism. By establishing a clear decision framework, Eliminate, Reduce, Replace, and Recycle, the guidelines enable hotel operators, restaurants, and suppliers to transition from a linear ‘take-make-waste’ model toward circular hospitality practices that protect fragile marine ecosystems, eliminate health risks from nanoplastic contamination in PET bottles, and elevate destination branding.
The REDUCE Guidelines 2026 establish a practical, four-tiered hierarchy: Eliminate, Reduce, Replace, and Recycle – alongside a Smart Procurement Decision Matrix to eliminate single-use plastics at the source across Zanzibar’s hospitality sector.
By transitioning away from single-use PET water bottles to in-house reverse osmosis filtration and reusable glass carafes, hotels safeguard guest health against nanoplastic contamination while cutting operating expenses. Tailored departmental action cards offer front-line checklists for housekeeping, food and beverage, events, and supply chain management, while vendor codes of conduct enforce packaging take-back schemes and prohibit Styrofoam.
