Background
Monitoring and assessment of plastic waste flows are essential to understand sources of plastic pollution and leakage points. These assessments provide key information for designing evidence-based policies and interventions to address plastic pollution in municipal solid waste (MSW) management systems. Although many stakeholders have developed methodologies to assess plastic waste flows, there is a lack of alignment in terminologies and variances in methodologies, causing inconsistencies when aggregating or comparing datasets at national, regional, or global levels.
The Global Partnership on Plastic Pollution and Marine Litter’s (GPML) Community of Practice (CoP) on Plastic Monitoring and Assessment Harmonization seeks to work collectively to allow for different tools and methodologies to better speak to one another and be more effectively used for analyses. Some efforts towards closing this gap have included the development of this report on Important Key Performance Indicators for National, Regional and Global Monitoring and Relevant Definitions of Terminologies for Harmonization (GPML, 2025). However, further alignment across different methodologies assessing plastic waste flows is required to enhance the consistency and interoperability across tools and approaches.
