The province of Phu Yen in Vietnam joined the Plastic Smart Cities initiative on 18 June 2020, establishing its capital, the City of Tuy Hoa as a pilot area with a plastic reduction goal of 30% by 2025. Phu Yen is located on Vietnam’s south-central coast, characterized by mountains and beaches.
On 20 June 2020, the City of Da Nang, Vietnam joined WWF’s Plastic Smart Cities initiative committing to reducing plastic leakage in the Thanh Khe district by 30% by 2022, with no plastic leakage by 2030. Da Nang is a coastal city in central Vietnam known for its sandy beaches and history as a French colonial port.
Today an estimated 60% of plastic marine debris derives from urban centers, as polluted waterways carry plastic pollution to the ocean. Cities like Da Nang and Tuy Hoa in the Phu Yen province that are strategically located along major waterways, play an increasingly important role in preventing plastic pollution from entering the ocean ecosystem. And today, we thank these cities for setting a model example with firm commitments on plastics to secure clean waterways with support from the Plastic Smart Cities initiative.
Phu Yen and Da Nang now join the island of Phu Quoc as the first three city and tourist destinations in Vietnam to join the global initiative, which now counts 23 city and tourist destination partners from around the world.
