Reducing Single-Use Plastic Bottles: Viet Nam’s Hue City Increases Water Refill Stations in Heritage Sites

As a committed Plastic Smart City, Hue organised multiple stakeholders across government departments and community groups* to support the set-up and maintenance of rest stations with dedicated free water refill stations at 5 more key tourist destinations in Hue city. To date, the PSC project in Hue has set up a total of 9 rest stations and water refill stations at key tourism and heritage sites in Hue City. This initiative to promote reduction in single-use plastic is part of Hue City’s commitment to Plastic Smart Cities.

Free, Clean and Safe Drinking Water at Tourism Hotspots

With the launch of 5 additional rest stops outfitted with free water refill stations, residents or tourists can use these amenities when visiting famous heritage sites in Hue at the Thien Mu Pagoda, Bao Vinh Ancient Town, Half-Moon Bridge, Vong Canh Hill, and Sinh Village.

At the event, leaders of the Party Committee of Hue City, Hue City’s People’s Committee, the Thua Thien Hue Province Department of Tourism, also provided alternative items – such as compostable utensils and cutlery made from coffee and rice straws – to replace single-use plastics to the tofu-selling street vendor community at the Thien Mu Pagoda.

In 2022 and 2023, the Hue Plastic Smart City project collaborated with the Hue Monuments Conservation Center to inaugurate four water refill stations at the three famous heritage destinations. These were the tomb of Emperor Gia Long, the tomb of Emperor Minh Mang, and the tomb of Emperor Dong Khanh.

Providing free, clean, and safe water is an important way of increasing awareness and engaging the public to participate directly in environmental sustainability, especially on reducing single-use plastics and understanding its impact on waste creation and pollution. Hue City hopes that the public – both residents and tourists – will develop a habit of carrying reusable water bottles or even drinking water directly from the water-refill stations, as more refill stations are set up across the city’s tourist hotspots.

*The project was made possible thanks to the support of the Department of Tourism of Thua Thien Hue Province, the Party Committee of Hue City, the Green Park Center’s Hue City People’s Committee, Hương Vinh Ward People’s Committee, and Phu Mau Commune People’s Committee.
