The majority of the world’s plastic waste enters the marine ecosystem from China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. These countries have experienced economic growth in recent years, leading to a reduction in poverty, and improved quality of life for some of their regional populations. However, with increasing economic power, there has been a surge in demand for consumer products that have not yet been met with sufficient waste-management infrastructure.
Many cities around the world do not have sufficient waste collection programs and infrastructure to keep up with the daily waste produced by their communities.
Solu seeks to improve waste management in developing nations by harnessing technology and data to optimize the collection process for existing stakeholders. Waste is a resource that can be re-used or re-purposed with significant economic potential; the Solu app provides the opportunity for that potential to be realized.
First, a user downloads the Solu app from the Google Play or Apple App Store. Users then place plastics, glass and biodegradable materials at home in their Solu Bag, which can be picked up at local Sari-Sari stores and at Solu Centers. Within the Solu app, users input the contents of their Solu bag and choose a Solu Center for drop-off. When the bag is delivered to the collection center, the users transactional QR code is scanned and the user receives money for their waste. The income can then be withdrawn from the user’s Solu Wallet as cash at a network of cash-out locations or the income can be transferred into a digital wallet.
Solu offers financial incentive to users to collect and deliver waste to local centers.
Other solutions that pay for recyclables include waste centers and similar software applications.
Solu is operating in the Philippines, see example here.
